Learning to Read
The school uses a reading scheme that has been banded into colour codes. These books are sent home and can be changed at least weekly in school. In additon to sending books to home to share with your family, we also use an online reading programme called 'Bug Club'. This scheme allows children access to all of the books on their colour level and challenges them with comprehension questions as they read so we can see if they can understand the texts that they are reading.
Through this we are able to ensure that the pupil is have exposure to the correct phonics and spelling level, challenging vocabulary and is building up their bank of familiar words which will assist them with writing too.
Every child should be reading for a short period of time at home every night. They can read their coloured band books, pop on to Bug Club and we would love to see and hear about your child reading a wide range of books that they may have at home or borrowed from free from the library in Basildon Town Centre.
If you have found a book that your child loves, please share it with your child's class teacher, they would love to share it with their class!
Look out on the weekly newsletter for book and author suggestions if you are unsure what your child should be reading. You can also find a list of recomended reading books for each year group below.
